How can the way we govern digital platforms shape peace and conflict? Online platforms shape how we connect and how we see the world, ourselves, and others. At times, online harms can fuel tensions that spill into real-world violence. So how can peacebuilders play a more active role in shaping the regulation of these platforms in ways that build trust and collaboration rather than deepen polarization and conflict?

In this webinar, members of the Council on Tech and Social Cohesion share key framing on emerging efforts to regulate the design of digital platforms – moving beyond content moderation to address the features, incentives, and systems that shape online behavior. They will walk through examples from jurisdictions including Utah, Europe, and Korea, and explore how these approaches aim to foster healthier online environments.

The discussion also unpacks some of the more contentious debates surrounding tech governance, including concerns about censorship and regulatory overreach. The discussion will draw on insights from the Prosocial Tech Design Governance: Practical Guide and the broader body of work emerging from the Council. Speakers will include:

  • Dr. Ravi Iyer (USC Neely Center for Ethical Leadership and Decision Making)
  • Lena Slachmuijlder (Co-Chair, Council on Tech and Social Cohesion)
  • Habibou Bako (Policy Officer, Bamako Forum on Social and Digital Cohesion).

Together, they invite participants to reflect on how peacebuilding practice can inform technology governance in ways that reduce polarization and support more resilient, cohesive societies.
