Event: Understanding Information Warfare in Sudan
London & online: 30 June, 10am – 12pm BST

Join us for a pre-publication discussion of five thematic research reports exploring how online narratives are shaping the war in Sudan and its offline consequences:

– Divisive Separatist Narratives: A Deep Dive into the “River and Sea” Discourse by Musa Idrees
– Digital Expression as a Psychological Response to Collective Trauma in Sudan by Tohfa Elkamil
– Rebranding the RSF: Strategies of Image-Washing Through Renaming and Narrative Shifts by Ethar Yousif Ahmed
– An Investigation of Digital Incitement Networks and Calls for Violence in Nyala by Makarim Noor
– Sudan’s Digital Battleground: How Social Media Narratives Lead to Real-World Violence by Hussam Abualfatah & Mahmoud Bastati

Over the past year, Build Up has convened a group of Sudanese civil society digital experts to monitor war narratives on social media. These five reports go deeper on the recurring narratives surfaced in our monthly monitoring and aim to support humanitarian and mediation practitioners working toward a peaceful Sudan. Inputs from the discussion will shape the final versions, to be published later this summer.

Speakers: Hussam Abualfatah, Ethar Yousif Ahmed, Helena Puig Larrauri
